Sustainability
Ensuring the social, economic and environmental sustainability of communities through responsible construction is at the very heart of Leadbitter’s activities.
With buildings accounting for around 40% of the UK’s total energy use, we are committed to constructing energy-efficient homes and properties to help reduce carbon emissions. We use a combination of sensitive design, local renewable materials and green technologies to make a significant impact on protecting the environment.
We consistently exceed national standards for green buildings and are proud to be involved in a number of industry-leading initiatives, such as the award winning New England Quarter ‘One Planet Living’ development in Brighton; Mariners Quay, the first Code Level 5 affordable housing scheme in South Wales; Newport High School, the first BREEAM Excellent Secondary School in Wales; and Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen (Gateway to the Valleys {G2V} Secondary School), which will be the first BREEAM Outstanding Secondary School in Wales.
Sustainability begins before construction starts, with detailed project waste management plans developed to design out waste during the construction process and ensure that what is generated is recycled and reused wherever possible. As one of the first contractors to sign up to the Waste & Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP) Halving Waste to Landfill initiative, Leadbitter has not only met that goal in its first two years, it has increased its target to 95 per cent waste diverted from landfill, which is being achieved on many of our projects.
The carbon footprint of our sites is further minimised through the use of local labour, encouraging our operatives to take public transport or carpool, and minimising water and electricity consumption on-site through the installation of energy-saving lighting and low-flow taps, as well as initiatives to raise awareness amongst our people and visitors.
We provide local employment and vocational training opportunities to give socially excluded people work experience and break the cycle of unemployment. We also engage with suppliers, tradespeople and labourers to enhance community economic development and provide a truly sustainable future.
