The Leadbitter Experience has been developed with the aim of connecting with school children to discuss the value of young people to the future of the construction industry and hopefully inspiring them to join our industry.
The objectives are to introduce the development and build process; provide a visual experience of the build stages; facilitate ‘hands-on’ experience of building practise; achieve an understanding of the diverse disciplines involved in providing homes for people; highlight ‘team working’ as an essential ingredient in construction and finally emphasise the importance of building site safety.
This is undertaken by way of introductory classroom sessions, followed by on-site visits, all of which is then recorded by the students and submitted back to Leadbitter. On completion of the Leadbitter Experience students are awarded a certificate, confirming attendance and participation.
In February 2007, our Western Division began a new initiative to provide the pupils of Mary Immaculate School with an ongoing programme to follow the development of a house from land purchase to occupation. The six month programme involved Year 10 pupils in a series of fortnightly talks and site visits to our mixed tenure housing development at Bryn Caerau, Cardiff. As a result of “The Leadbitter Experience” four pupils have completed a full week of work experience at the Bryn Caerau site and two have contacted sub-contractors with a view to negotiating apprenticeships in bricklaying.
